In a satellite unit of Canyonlands National Park but many miles to the west is Horseshoe Canyon. After the 30 miles of dirt road driving, you’ll feel the need to stretch your legs and see, in my opinion, the best rock art in the USA. There are several panels including the famous 200 feet-long Great Gallery where the ancient human-size pictographs are stunning. They're at least 2000 years old. The 6.5 mile roundtrip trail is good – you're mostly hiking down of the rim on an old jeep road – but hiking out in mid summer is shadeless and hot. When you reach the canyon floor hike up canyon (right). There are a number of sites, mostly on the right hand canyon wall and signed.

To get there drive south from I-70 on highway 24 towards Hanksville.for about 25 miles to the turn off on the left. It's opposite a signed turn off for Goblin Valley State Park. This good dirt road can be driven in a 2WD car if the road is dry and the driver careful. There's good signage along the way to keep you on the correct route.
